The Philadelphia Eagles have named rookie quarterback Carson Wentz as their starter for the week-one clash with the Cleveland Browns.

Wentz was selected with the second pick of the 2016 NFL Draft but had been expected to sit on the bench in the early stages of the season behind veteran Sam Bradford.

Bradford was traded to the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday but, with Wentz having missed time during preseason with a rib injury, back-up Chase Daniel was set to start against the Browns on Sunday.

However, coach Doug Pederson confirmed on Monday that Wentz, who was drafted out of North Dakota State, would be under centre when the Eagles kick off their season.

He also confirmed a further move was likely to bring in another quarterback to act as third string, with Wentz and Daniel the only two signal-callers on their current 53-man roster.

Pederson said: "I'm excited. I'm thrilled. It's an opportunity for him and an opportunity for our football team. This is why we drafted Carson Wentz. He's ready to go.

"Chase Daniel is a team player and he's been a great mentor for Carson. I feel really comfortable with where we are.
