Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer is not sure when running back Adrian Peterson will be able to return to action after confirming he suffered a torn meniscus on Sunday.

Peterson injured his right knee in the Vikings' 17-14 win over the Green Bay Packers and was seen on crutches as he left US Bank Stadium for further evaluation.

But fears the 31-year-old had torn his anterior cruciate ligament proved unfounded and Zimmer said there was, as yet, no timescale for his absence from the team.

"(He is) going through the evaluation process to figure out what the next procedure will be and the options that we have," Zimmer said.

"We're not going to be the only team in the league to have injuries. It's just part of professional football. This is a pretty resilient football team. They're tough and determined."

Peterson had struggled for rhythm in Minnesota's opening two games of the season, which both ended in narrow wins, and had rushed for only 50 yards on 31 carries.

Matt Asiata and Jerick McKinnon would appear to be the first two running backs in line for extra work should Peterson miss an extended period of time.
