Washington Redskins have confirmed that head coach Jay Gruden has put pen-to-paper on a new multi-year contract extension.

Reports emerged over the weekend that terms had been agreed and the Redskins released a statement confirming Gruden's new deal on Monday, although the length of the contract was not disclosed.

The Redskins missed out on the play-offs last year, despite a second winning season under the 50-year-old, which was Washington's first back-to-back winning seasons in almost 20 years.

Having succeeded Mike Shanahan in January 2014, Gruden has a regular-season record of 21-26-1 in three seasons with the Redskins, including winning the NFC East title in 2015 before going on to lose to Green Bay in the wild card round of the play-offs.

Last season Gruden saw his offence, led by quarterback Kirk Cousins, post a host of franchise records including total yards and total passing. Eight Washington players also finished the season with at least 500 yards from scrimmage, tying the most for a single season in NFL history (set by New Orleans in 2011).

Cousins was franchise tagged by the Redskins last week for the second season in succession and while the team has until mid-July to agree a long-term deal, there has also been speculation that he could be traded, with San Francisco 49ers reportedly in the frame.

DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon are set to hit free agency meaning Gruden could face a busy off-season as the Redskins chase down a second NFC East title in three years after a record-breaking 2016.
