Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson suffered a 'significant' knee injury against the Indianapolis Colts.

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson will undergo surgery after suffering a “significant” ankle injury against the Indianapolis Colts.

Carson's ankle got twisted badly as he was wrapped up in a tackle by Colts linebacker John Bostic in the fourth quarter of the Seahawks' 46-18 win, with scans also revealing a fracture just below his left knee.

"Last night when they did the initial X-rays, his ankle was fine," Carroll told ESPN.

"And they didn't see anything cracked there. But he's got a fracture that's way up just below his knee. It's not a displaced one and all that.

"But because of the torque, the way it happened, it was not in the area they were focusing on. And so I told the team he didn't have a broken leg, and everybody was excited about that for him. But he does."

Carson, who was an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State, was a nice story out of training camp as he beat out the more established Eddie Lacy, Thomas Rawls and C.J. Prosise to grab the starting role in the Seahawks backfield.

The 23-year-old had rushed for 208 yards on 49 attempts (4.2 YPC) while also catching seven passes for 59 yards and a touchdown over the first four games.

With Carson out, Lacy, who ran for 52 yards against Indianapolis, and Rawls are likely to compete for early-down work for the Seahawks.

Prosise missed Sunday's game with an ankle injury but figures to be the Seahawks' primary running-back option on passing downs once he returns.

J.D. McKissic could also factor into the mix after a breakout performance against the Colts which saw him account for 65 yards and two touchdowns on only five touches (four carries, one catch).
