QB requires 12 stitches in head wound, Jets routed in pre-season
Eli Manning suffered a deep gash to the head during the New York Giants' 31-16 pre-season win over the New York Jets.
The quarterback was hurt early in the second quarter when he was struck in the back by Jets linebacker Calvin Pace as he tried to retrieve his own fumble.
The impact of Pace's hit knocked off Manning's helmet and slammed him forward into his running back Brandon Jacobs, who went on to recover the ball, and Jets safety Jim Leonhard.
With blood flowing from a cut to his left temple, he was able to walk to the sideline at the New Meadowlands.
Manning, who completed four of eight passes for 77 yards before his early exit, needed 12 stitches to close the three-inch wound but he was not concussed.
Cruz control
His replacement, Jim Sorgi, produced a solid effort in relief, throwing two touchdowns as the Giants dominated their city rivals.
Free agent wide receiver Victor Cruz enjoyed a day to remember, hauling in both of Sorgi's touchdown passes and adding a third when third-choice quarterback Rhett Bomar came in late on.
Rookie Cruz finished with 145 yards from six catches.
Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez made 13 of 17 passes for 119 yards, including his team's only touchdown, a four-yard effort to Brad Smith in the first quarter.
Sanchez, who played almost all of the opening half, moved freely in his first competitive action since undergoing surgery on his left knee.
