The Buffalo Bills have released quarterback Trent Edwards after he lost the starting job to Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Quarterback had already lost starting role to Fitzpatrick
The Buffalo Bills have released quarterback Trent Edwards following a disappointing start to the season.
Edwards, in his fourth year with the Bills since being drafted in the third round out of Stanford, lost the starting job after generating just 17 points during defeats to Miami and Green Bay.
The offence showed signs of life in week three under the guidance of his replacement, Ryan Fitzpatrick, albeit still in a losing cause as AFC East rivals New England claimed a 38-30 win.
Speaking later, Bills head coach Chan Gailey said: "Those kind of decisions are never easy. He gave us everything he had.
"We just felt like we were not going to go back in that direction at the next juncture."
Gailey added: "Trent did the best he could and he's a great young man and I wish him the best.
"He handled it professionally just as he handled the demotion the week before. He is a guy that faces everything straight on.
"He was disappointed, I believe, but he understands it's a business."
His exit leaves Buffalo with just two quarterbacks on their roster, Fitzpatrick and third-year pro Brian Brohm, who has made just one career start.
