The Dallas Cowboys went down 41-35 to the New York Giants and lost quarterback Tony Romo to a broken collarbone.
Giants top NFC East after road win
The Dallas Cowboys' season went from bad to worse as quarterback Tony Romo suffered a broken left clavicle during his side's 41-35 defeat to the New York Giants on Monday.
Romo, the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback, sustained the injury early in the second quarter in Arlington when he was hit by blitzing Giants linebacker Michael Boley, who was left unblocked.
The Cowboys, now 1-5 for the season after a third straight home defeat, actually led 20-7 when Romo left the game.
An early Jason Witten touchdown catch and Dez Bryant's 93-yard punt return had put the hosts in control against their NFC East rivals.
But Giants quarterback Eli Manning turned things around with five straight scoring drives either side of half-time.
He threw touchdown passes to Hakeem Nicks and Steve Smith in the second quarter before a Lawrence Tynes field goal from 53 yards put the visitors 24-20 ahead.
Kitna struggles
With Romo's replacement Jon Kitna failing to generate much offence, the Giants took command in the third quarter with two more touchdowns - Mario Manningham hauling in a 25-yard pass, Manning's fourth touchdown to go with three picks, and Brandon Jacobs going in from 30 yards on the ground.
Kitna finally found his range late on with a pair of tochdowns to Bryant but it was too little, too late.
Romo, who has not missed a game since the 2008 season, was wearing a sling at the post-match press conference and does not know how long he will be sidelined.
"We will find out (the extent of the injury) tomorrow (Tuesday), anything else would be speculation," he said.
"It felt like a sprain. I was upset, disappointed and I was frustrated. You work to be in these games and be in these positions."
The Giants are now top of the NFC East with a 5-2 record.
