Broncos make coaching change after disappointing run

Josh McDaniels has been fired as head coach of the Denver Broncos after a miserable run that has seen the team slip to 3-9 this season. McDaniels was shown the exit door in the wake of his side's 10-6 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, their third loss in a row. The 34-year-old becomes the NFL's third coaching casualty in the space of a month, after Wade Phillips and Brad Childress were recently fired by the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings respectively. Running backs coach Eric Studesville has been appointed as the interim head coach for the remaining four games of the season. "My decision to relieve Josh McDaniels as head coach was not taken lightly. I will always be appreciative of his passion, enthusiasm and hard work, and I thank him for his efforts," Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said in a statement. "In the end, I was not satisfied with the results and the direction this team was headed. The decision to make a change was extremely difficult but one that needed to be made for this organization and our fans." McDaniels made a flying start after being appointed as the Broncos' head coach, racing to a 6-0 record at the beginning of the 2009 season. But Denver's fortunes would quickly change for the worse as they began a dismal streak that stood at 5-17 at the time of McDaniels' firing.
