Brett Favre will miss his first start since September 1992 after being ruled inactive for the Vikings' fixture against the Giants on Monday.
Quarterback's record run finished at 297 regular-season starts
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre has been ruled out of Monday's match against the New York Giants, bringing an end to his NFL record streak of consecutive starts.
Favre had started the previous 297 regular-season games, 321 including play-offs, a run that dates back to September 1992.
The 41-year-old was forced out of the Vikings' win over the Buffalo Bills last Sunday after being hit on the opening series.
And he has been unable to overcome an injury to his throwing shoulder in time for week 14, despite being given an extra day to recover when a portion of the Metrodome's inflatable roof collapsed under heavy snowfall.
That prompted the NFL to switch the Vikings-Giants clash to Ford Field in Detroit and put it back 24 hours until Monday.
But Favre, who has also played for the Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers and New York Jets during his 20 seasons in the league, was ruled out prior to kick-off.
"It's been a long time," Favre said.
"I'd much rather be playing, that's just my nature. I won't say it was time (for the streak to end) but it probably was long overdue.
"There have probably been a lot of times the streak should have ended. I can't believe something like this hasn't happened before. Pretty amazing.
"I don't like getting injured but that is part of it... I will not hang my head one bit because it ended today."
