San Diego hand lucrative deal to Pro Bowl safety
Eric Weddle will become the highest paid safety in the NFL after agreeing a five-year, $40 million contract with the San Diego Chargers.
Weddle, 26, can sign on the dotted line on Friday when the league's free agency period resumes following the end of the four-month lockout.
"I'm on cloud nine," Weddle, who was picked by the Chargers in the second round of the 2007 draft, told the
San Diego Union-Tribune.
"This is the team I love. I feel we have unfinished business. I want to prove I was worth this deal."
The 26-year-old went to the Pro Bowl last season after racking up 96 tackles and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown.
San Diego finished with a 9-7 record in 2010 and missed out on the play-offs for the first time in five years.
