The Baltimore Ravens have terminated the contract of Ray Rice and the running back has also been suspended indefinitely by the NFL.

Rice was originally banned for two games earlier this summer for an altercation with his wife - his girlfriend at the time of the incident - in an elevator at an Atlantic City casino.

The decision to end his contract and impose the new sanction comes on the same day further video footage of Rice appearing to punch Janay Palmer in February was released by American celebrity gossip website TMZ.

A brief release from the franchise read: "The Ravens terminated the contract of running back Ray Rice on Monday afternoon."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell admitted after the punishment was handed down to Rice that it should have been more severe than just two games.

Since then, he has overseen a revamp of the league's entire abuse policy and a minimum six game ban is in place for a first offence involving domestic violence.

"I didn't get it right," Goodell said. "Simply put, we have to do better. And we will."

The Ravens opened their season on Sunday with a 23-16 defeat by the Cincinnati Bengals and play next on Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
