The Kansas City Chiefs produced a sensational display to hammer the New England Patriots 41-14 on Monday.

Alex Smith completed 20-of-26 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns, while Jamaal Charles grabbed three touchdowns and Knile Davis racked up 107 rushing yards.

Wide receivers Dwayne Bowe (81 yards off five receptions) and Travis Kelce (93 yards off eight receptions) also made telling contributions as Kansas cut loose.

Charles, who registered 108 yards in total, opened the scoring off a two-yard run, before he doubled his tally in the second quarter – this time off Smith’s five-yard pass.

Cairo Santos landed a 22-yard field goal to make it 17-0 to the Chiefs at the half-time break.

The Smith-Charles combination worked again from eight yards to put the result beyond doubt in the third quarter, with Santos then slotting over a 31-yard field goal.

Responded

The Patriots finally got on the scoreboard when Tom Brady connected with Brandon LaFell for a 44-yard touchdown.

However Kansas responded with two more touchdowns in the final quarter, with Kelce scoring off a two-yard Smith pass and Husain Abdullah returning a Brady interception 39 yards.

Rookie Jimmy Garoppolo, who replaced Brady in the fourth quarter, found Rob Gronkowski with a 13-yard touchdown pass but it was not enough to stop the Patriots slipping to their second biggest defeat since 2000.

“We couldn't really move the ball consistently on offence and then turned it over in the second half and gave up another long drive and just didn't play very well," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said.

"Kansas City played very well so that was a bad combination for us. We all have got to do a better job."
