The New England Patriots have released veteran cornerback Kyle Arrington.

Arrington started four regular season games last season and all three playoff matchups, including Super Bowl XLIX.

The Patriots are left without a single starting cornerback from their Super Bowl victory after Arrington’s release and the departure of Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner in free agency.

Arrington was scheduled to earn $3m this season and count $4.625m against the salary cap. His release means the Patriots will incur a cap hit of $3.25m in dead money.

The 28-year-old has appeared in 86 games for New England since getting promoted from the practice squad in 2009 and led the NFL in interceptions in 2011 with seven.

The team released cornerback Alfonso Dennard last week leaving Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler and 2013 third-round pick Logan Ryan players as the only two cornerbacks on the roster from last season.

Bradley Fletcher, Robert McClain and Chimdi Chekwa were added in free agency while the team drafted Marshall corner Daryl Roberts in the seventh round of the NFL Draft.

The Patriots were busy on Monday as the team also signed former Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis on a one-year deal.

Davis joined the Patriots on Monday, four days after being reinstated by the NFL from an indefinite suspension for a second violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

Davis, 29, played 72 games with the Redskins from 2008 to 2013. A second-round draft selection in 2008, Davis has 162 career receptions for 2,043 yards and 13 touchdowns.
