The NFL has approved proposals to increase the distance on extra-point kicks from touchdowns back to the 15-yard line.

The teams' owners also voted to allow defences to score on failed conversion attempts in an attempt to add more excitement to the games.

The new format means the snap of the ball on extra-point kicks will move from the two-yard line to the 15.

Conversions were rarely missed with 26 of the 32 teams not missing an extra point at all last season.

The teams also went 163-of-171 on field goals between 30-35 yards.

On two-point conversion attempts, starting next season, the ball will still be placed at the two but the defences will now be allowed to return an interception, fumble or blocked kick to the opposing team's end zone for two points.
