The Minnesota Vikings and Adrian Peterson have mutually agreed to restructure the final three years of the star running back’s contract.
Contract details were not disclosed by the team but it is expected Peterson will receive more guaranteed money over the next two seasons while bringing down his base salary.
Peterson was due to make $12.75m, $14.75m and $16.75m in base salary over the next three seasons and Vikings general manager Rick Spielman called the restructure a win for both sides.
"This agreement is a win for both Adrian and the Vikings and is a positive step toward Adrian finishing his career as a Minnesota Viking," said Spielman.
"As we have consistently said, Adrian is a valuable part of the Vikings organization and we look forward to his return to the field.”
Peterson missed all but one game in 2014 after being suspended for using a ‘switch’, similar to a cane, to discipline his four-year-old son, who was injured in the incident.
The 30-year-old was unhappy with the level of support offered to him during the scandal and tried unsuccessfully to force his way out of Minnesota during the off-season.
However he returned to organised team activities at the beginning of June and this restructure ensures he will remain with the Vikings.
"I appreciate the Vikings for working together on this restructured contract, which provides additional security for me but also allows opportunities for me to further prove my value to the team and within the NFL," said Peterson.
"It was important for me to continue my career in Minnesota, and I cannot wait to get on the field in front of Vikings fans again."
Peterson has rushed for 10,190 yards and 86 touchdowns, and racked up 1,715 yards and five touchdowns receiving, during a Hall-of-Fame career in Minnesota since being taken with the seventh overall pick of the 2007 draft.
