The Arizona Cardinals have signed veteran running back Chris Johnson on a one-year deal.

Johnson, who rushed for 2,006 yards in a season earlier in his career, was a free agent after being released by the New York Jets at the end of last year.

He managed 663 yards on 155 rushing attempts for the Jets, but scored only one touchdown.

Johnson will most likely back-up starting running-back Andre Ellington in Arizona, with the franchise unsure how long rookie rusher David Johnson will be sidelined by a hamstring injury.

Ellington had a 57-yard reception and scored a rushing touchdown in their pre-season clash with the Kansas City Chiefs last weekend.

"Chris is one of those guys where every time he touched the ball, you held your breath," coach Bruce Arians said. "He can take it to the house."
