Jordy Nelson of the Green Bay Packers has sustained a serious knee injury, according to NFL.com.
The wide receiver suffered the injury in the opening drive of the Packers' 24-19 pre-season defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
It has been initially diagnosed as a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Nelson, one of the sport's premier wideouts, follows the Carolina Panthers' Kelvin Benjamin onto the treatment table meaning the NFL's new season will begin without a pair of the top performers in their position.
Last season, Nelson combined with Green Bay's wide receiver Randall Cobb as the NFL's most prolific duo.
Davante Adams, the up-and-coming second-year wideout, will step up as Nelson's replacement.
