Veteran wide receiver Reggie Wayne has agreed to a one-year contract with the New England Patriots.
The Green Bay Packers reportedly had been interested in signing Wayne to replace the injured Jordy Nelson, but Wayne decided to sign with the Patriots instead, according to reports from ESPN.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, making his weekly appearance on WEEI radio in Boston, confirmed the move on Monday, "I think we've agreed. I've had several (conversations) with him.
"He's certainly had a great career and has done a lot of things for the Colt organization, primarily playing on the left but then in more recent years being moved around to playing on the right and also in some slot situations.
"I think he has a lot of versatility and obviously he has a lot of experience, so we'll just have to see how it goes."
Wayne, who turns 37 in November, caught 64 catches for 779 yards in 2014, his poorest season. He wanted to play his 15th straight season with the Colts, who informed him they were going in another direction.
There hadn't been much movement for Wayne, who is seventh in NFL career receptions (1,070, 82 for touchdowns) and eighth in yardage (14,345), but the Patriots have been battling through injuries in the preseason and the need was there.
Julian Edelman has been out since August 2 with a lower leg injury, though he is still expected to be ready for Week 1.
Brandon LaFell remains on the physically unable to perform list while Aaron Dobson has been sidelined by a reported hamstring injury the last two weeks.
Brandon Gibson, a free-agent acquisition from the Miami Dolphins, was placed in injured reserve on Monday after injuring his knee against the New Orleans Saints while Brian Tyms was "waived/injured" after sustaining a foot injury in practice.
