Quarterback Brian Hoyer made a swift impact as Houston Texans claimed a 27-13 pre-season win over New Orleans Saints.

Hoyer, recently confirmed as the Texas starting quarterback, settled well into the role as he led scoring drives on two of his first series, finishing with seven of 11 for 82 yards.

Ryan Mallett, who will serve as back-up to Hoyer, gave a reminder of his worth by throwing a six-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Strong.

The Saints (0-3) outgained the Texans (2-1), 393 yards to 292 yards, with New Orleans reserve running back Edwin Baker scoring on a 45-yard run.

But New Orleans lacked a cutting edge and their first two trips inside Houston's 20 produced only three points.

Drew Brees marched the Saints 75 yards for a field goal on his lone series.

Tom Savage, another of Houston's quarterbacks, kept his side in command as he hit Chandler Worthy for a six-yard score in the fourth quarter.
