The New England Patriots released veteran wide receiver Reggie Wayne on Saturday as teams around the NFL trimmed their rosters to make the NFL’s 53-man limit.

The 36-year-old only signed with the Patriots on August 25 but struggled to make a significant impression and asked the team for his release.

Wayne's one-year contract with the Patriots had a maximum value of $2.8 million and included a $450,000 signing bonus.

Head coach Bill Belichick said: "Obviously, Reggie's time here was brief but it only confirmed what I already thought – he is a true professional who represents every positive attribute a player should emulate.

"Our parting was mutually agreed upon and I am personally grateful to have worked with one of the great NFL players of the past two decades."

Wayne is a six-time Pro Bowl selection and his 14,345 receiving yards are the eighth-most in NFL history.

The Patriots also released running back Jonas Gray, who had 201 yards in a victory at Indianapolis last November.
