NFL UK fantasy picks: Alex Ferguson makes his week two selections
Thursday 17 September 2015 10:55, UK
As we head into week two of the NFL season, Alex Ferguson returns with a fresh batch of Fantasy picks.
It was a funny Week 1 of the NFL season, with a few surprises on the fantasy front. Marshawn Lynch struggled against St Louis, Miami failed to impress against Washington's supposedly awful secondary, and Odell Beckham hardly had a look-in. Expect a few more in Week 2!
LAST WEEK:
I'm currently fourth in the Sky Sports Pundits fantasy league with 83, currently thanking God for Matt Bryant's kicking boots against Philadelphia, and Aaron Rodgers' throwing arm. Otherwise, the lack of return from Jarvis Landry and Jordan Cameron against Washington's secondary, and Green Bay's James Jones being the top receiving target ahead of Davante Adams really stung me. To the tune of zero touchdowns.
Anyway, here are my picks for Week 2…
QUARTERBACK
Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints)
Considering how awful Tampa Bay were defensively against Tennessee, we're picking Brees as our quarterback this week. On Sunday against Arizona - a much better defense - Brees threw for 355 yards, one TD and one INT. Of course, there are worries about whether no Jimmie Graham means less productivity for Brees - but it seems that anyone could put up points against this secondary.
RUNNING BACK
Marshawn Lynch (Seattle Seahawks)
Lynch struggled against a brutal St Louis Rams defensive front in the Seahawks' surprise overtime loss, putting up just over 70 yards and no TDs, but we think he'll be back against a Green Bay defense that is - and we're putting this nicely - awful against the rush. The Pack gave up 189 yards on the floor to the Bears on Saturday, so we're expecting some big things, Beast.
Ameer Abdullah (Detroit Lions)
Abdullah was a star in college at Nebraska, and had almost 100 all-purpose yards and a TD for the Lions against the Chargers. This week he plays a Minnesota defense that was shredded against Carlos Hyde and the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. He's also $2m - one less than our original choice, Jeremy Hill (Cincinnati Bengals).
WIDE RECEIVER
Brandin Cooks (New Orleans Saints)
Cooks was quiet against Arizona - but as we mentioned, the Cards were great at quietening Drew Brees in Week 1. We're expecting a much better Week 2 from him. And at $2m, he's pretty cheap, too.
Keenan Allen (San Diego Chargers)
Allen had 166 yards receiving in San Diego's comeback win against Detroit on Sunday, and he could be primed for a big game against Cincinnati if their pass defense was as bad as it was against Oakland's Matt McGloin in the final minutes of the game. If Philip Rivers is on song, Allen could have another big day.
Tight End
Tyler Eifert (Cincinnati Bengals)
This $2m bargain had the game of his NFL career against Oakland, scoring two TDs and grabbing nine catches for 102 yards and playing like the player that we loved so much when he was in college at Notre Dame. He won't blow your mind by taking 90-yard receptions to the house, but he could actually make Andy Dalton look OK.
Defence
Miami Dolphins
After Cincinnati gave up two garbage-time touchdowns to destroy our shut-out hopes, we were in a bit of despair (we could have done with the extra points). This week we're going instead with the Dolphins, who play a rather inept offense in Jacksonville. Last week they played Washington, against whom they had three sacks and two interceptions.
Kicker
Zach Hocker (New Orleans Saints)
Hocker went 4-4 in field goals against Arizona on Sunday.
We picked Hocker instead of Bryant because of the match-up (against Tampa Bay), and the New Orleans Saints are at home, which could give him some advantage over our last week's choice, Matt Bryant (who plays in New York this week). He also played college at Arkansas, if you're asking: "Who is Zach Hocker?"
