How the drama unfolded in Super Bowl XLIII
STEELERS 27 CARDINALS 23
Pittsburgh Steelers have become the NFL's most successful franchise by snatching their sixth Super Bowl victory from the Arizona Cardinals.
Santonio Holmes' reception inside the last two minutes proved to be the winning score as Ben Roethlisberger dragged his side back from the brink.
They had led at the half only to come unstuck as a Larry Fitzgerald-inspired Cardinals offense exploded into life to turn the game on its head.
Two touchdowns from Fitzgerald and a precious safety put them 23-20 ahead, but with 35 seconds remaining, Holmes held on, grounded his feet inside the lines and left Pittsburth celebrating Super Bowl number six.
Here's how the drama unfolded...
Fourth quarter
STEELERS WIN The last-chance saloon calls time on Arizona as, under pressure from LaMarr Woodley looking for the Hail Mary from 44 yards, Warner fumbles and Pittsburgh recover. A 15-yard penalty is redundant, the review confirms a fumble and the Steeler Nation can start celebrating... again!
CRUNCH TIME Arizona need to get 77 yards in 29 seconds. They start by hitting Fitzgerald long down the middle for 21, but are forced to give up a time out to stop the clock. Arrington then goes to the 44-yard line and the last time out goes... one shot at glory, Kurt. One shot!
TOUCHDOWN! Unbelievable! Second and goal and Big Ben pings one deep to the right-hand corner where Santonio Holmes, under double coverage, takes a brilliant catch and somehow manages to ground his feet with inches to spare. Or so it seems. It's being reviewed, but it looks good - and it is! Reed slots the extra and it's Pittsburgh by four!
IN RANGE Another long reception from Holmes - helped by an untimely slip from Francisco - takes his stats to 8-125 and puts the Steelers within field goal range. But Big Ben looks ice-cool and will have thoughts of winning this outright. He just misses Holmes in the end zone.
DRIVE TIME Santonio Holmes takes Pittsburgh to a first down, but they need a time out to halt the clock as the possibility of a Jeff Reed field goal looms ever larger - and it's a little bit blowy down there.
TWO-MINUTE WARNING For the first time all night, Arizona are ahead. A field goal would take us to overtime of course, but what do the Steelers - who, let's face it, are used to closing not chasing games - have up their sleeves?
STAT ATTACK Big Ben leads the NFL in fourth-quarter game-winning drives since 2004 and shows why as he scrambles for his life and hits Santonio Holmes for 22 yards from the edge of his own end zone.
TOUCHDOWN! Larry Fitzgerald again! Warner hits him short from his own 35 yard line but with the secondary split, Larry is able to open his legs and set off down the middle. Try as they might, the Steelers cannot get close to the man who now has two TD's and one eye on an MVP trophy. Rackers slots the point after and the underdogs are in the lead. The Steeler Nation is stunned!
HUGE PLAY Third and 10 on the Steelers' one-yard line, Big Ben hits Santonio Holmes for 21 yards but there's a flag... and it's against the offense. Holding in the end zone and that means one thing and one thing only... a safety! Justin Hartwig is the guilty party and now there's four in it!
PUNT... AND A PUNCH Ben Graham pins the Steelers inside their two-yard line as Arizona sensibly decline a fourth and 20, but before its grounded James Harrison is flagged for punching, pushing and being downright nasty to poor old Aaron Francisco.
ANOTHER PENALTY Mike Gandy is called for holding for a third time to leave Warner facing second and 20 despite 10 completions in a row. That's a new Super Bowl record for Arizona, but with under four minutes remaining, they are in Pittsburgh territory.
PERSONAL FOUL Signs that it is all getting to Pittsburgh as Ike Taylor lashes out at Anquan Boldin on the sidelines, right under the nose of Ken Whisenhunt. That's the first call against the Steelers this half and perhaps a sign of the times?
SACKED Big Ben eats turf again as the Cardinals blitz does what defenses have been doing all season and steamrollering that Pittsburgh offensive line to force the punt. It rolls dead at Arizona's 25-yard line and we've six minutes to play. Over to you, Kurt...
TOUCHDOWN! Trademark catch from Larry Fitzgerald as Warner pops one up and the receiver with the reach towers over Ike Taylor in the corner for his fourth reception of an 87-yard drive of 3mins 57secs. The point after is a formality and all of a sudden we are down to a one-score game.
RED ZONE Two big catches from JJ Arrington and Larry Fitzgerald move Arizona into striking range. You get the feeling they need a TD from this, but so do Pittsburgh and Larry is bundled out of bounds on first and goal. Time out called... defensive.
BURIED Pittsburgh are forced to punt as the Cards defense does a job on Big Ben, but the punt is huge, the chase is superb and William Gay hammers Steve Breaston on the 13-yard line before he could even think about making any yardage on the return.
PENALTY Mike Gandy has to use illegal methods to stop James Harrison getting to the QB. His holding penalty sets the Cards back 10 yards and takes their penalty count to 91 - the record in a Super Bowl is just over 100.
Third quarter
COUNTDOWN The final seconds of the third quarter tick away so let's finish it with a stat - so far Warner has attempted just one pass of more than 10 yards from the line of scrimmage. Hats off to Pittsburgh's secondary for taking away the big play.
FIELD GOAL Wilson is bailed out by his defensive team-mates as Pittsburgh fail to get the ball in the end zone from five yards out. Instead Reed comes back on to slot over a 21-yarder to end a drive lasting over eight minutes. It's now 20-7.
PENALTY KILLER The Cards are folding under the pressure of penalties. Adrian Wilson foolishly runs over the holder after Jeff Reed kicks a field goal on fourth down. Instead of being three points it a first down on the five-yard line. That's the third personal foul on this drive alone.
MARCHING ON Having averaged under three yards a carry so far, Wilie Parker finally finds a gap on the ground to pick up some more yards and put Pittsburgh in sight of the end zone.
PENALTY The Steelers are given a helping hand on their opening drive of the second half, two penalties netting them some free yardage, though the second call on Dansby for roughing the passer looked debatable at best.
CHALLENGE The officials rule a fumble when Warner is sacked, though coach Ken Whisenhunt quickly throws the red flag and replays show that the quarterback was attempting to throw as the ball popped out, making it an incomplete pass. Despite the successful challenge the Steelers are still getting the ball, as Arizona have to punt on fourth down.
RE-START The Cards receive the ball to start the second half, giving Warner a chance to make amends for that late, late error in the second quarter. Apart from that he played well in the first half, completing 12-of-17 pass attempts.
Half time
'The Boss' requests the viewers to stop going at the guacamole dip and leave the chicken wings alone before he kicks off his set with '10th Avenue Freeze Out'. Of course Springsteen actually hails from New Jersey, though I'm not sure if any of the E Street Band are followers of our two Super Bowl teams.
So from looking at an Arizona lead we instead have a 10-point advantage in favour of favourites Pittsburgh. Harrison's incredible run has put him in pole position to be named MVP and the Cards will wonder just how they are not ahead heading in for their half-time oranges. Follow that first 30 minutes Bruce Springsteen!
Second quarter
RECORD! That interception return by Harrison will enter the record books as the longest play in Super Bowl history. The booth reviewed the footage to see if the Steelers linebacker had been grounded before the ball crossed the line. After a lengthy look the TD is given.
TOUCHDOWN! There's a TD in Tampa but amazingly it's not for the Cards. Warner feels the heat with plenty of pressure from yet another blitz and fails to see James Harrison standing in front of his intended receiver. The linebacker somehow tip-toes his way down the sideline, a fair effort for a man over 200lbs, and gets himself into the end zone! What a sensational swing right before the end of the opening half.
FITZGERALD CATCH With under a minute to play in the half Warner finally manages to get the ball to Larry Fitzgerald. The Steelers have double-teamed the beanpole receiver, allowing Arizona to throw the ball flat out to their running backs. Key drive now for the Cards with time ticking away...
INTERCEPTION! Big Ben sees a bullet pass hit a Cardinals lineman and balloon up into the welcoming arms of Karlos Dansby, who can't believe his luck. A timely break for Arizona in the final two minutes of the first half.
GREAT TACKLE Having seen their drive stall, the Cards pen their opponents deep thanks to Michael Adams' tremendous tackle on Santonio Holmes that stops the returner in his tracks after fielding the punt.
SACKED! The Pittsburgh defence - better known as 'Blitzburgh' for coordinator Dick LeBeau's love for getting pressure on the opposing QB - comes up with their first sack of Warner, LaMarr Woodley the man making the play. The Cards take their first time out facing a third and long.
PUNT RETURN The Cards are soaring now, Steve Breaston returning a Pittsburgh punt 34 yards to set up excellent field position. Suddenly the terrible towels are not waving so much inside Raymond James Stadium.
CRUCIAL CATCH That score should calm the nerves for Arizona and most importantly of all we saw the first involvement of one of their big guns at WR - Anquan Boldin reeling in a 45-yard pass before being stopped just short of the end zone.
TOUCHDOWN! The Cards crucially strike right back with an excellent 83-yard drive that saw just one rushing play. It ends with yet another pass, Warner just about staying on his feet to find tight end Ben Patrick - that's his first TD catch of the season! Rackers adds the extra point and now we have a ball game again.
TOUCHDOWN! 10-0 - The Steelers don't make the same mistake again on third-and-one, sending in Gary Russell to plough in for the opening touchdown of the Super Bowl. We're 59 seconds into the second quarter and the deficit is now in double digits.
First quarter
QUARTER OVER So that's the end of the first quarter and the Steelers are in danger of going even further ahead. The Cards need another stop like they managed in the red zone to stop this score getting out of hand.
DRIVE STALLS - Arizona's first drive fails to deliver, not helped by a costly holding penalty and a fumble by quarterback Kurt Warner.
FIELD GOAL! 3-0 - The Steelers take the lead as Jeff Reed chips over one of the easiest field goals of his career. A fine start for the favourites as they begin with a five-minute scoring drive.
Big Ben ploughs in on third-and-one and the officials award a touchdown! However, the Cards throw the red flag to challenge, a move that pays off as replays show the quarterback was down before the ball broke the line.
KICK-OFF Neil Rackers gets Super Bowl XLIII underway as flash bulbs dazzle around the stadium. Gary Russell brings the kick back.
COIN TOSS The Cards win the toss (it's the 12th straight time the NFC team has done so in the Super Bowl) and strangely decide to kick the ball away.
NATIONAL ANTHEM Jennifer Hudson belts out a beautfiul rendition of 'Star Spangled Banner' that brings the sell-out crowd to fever-pitch right before the action gets underway.
PRE-GAME Raymond James Stadium is filling up as kick-off approaches - there's going to be a sizeable advantage for Pittsburgh judging by the terrible towels already being waved in the air. Is it too much to ask for another thriller like the New York Giants and the New England Patriots served up in last year's showpiece?
