Dolphins bring in kicker as part of rebuilding programme.
The Miami Dolphins have signed former Kansas City and San Diego kicker Dave Rayner to a one-year contract.
Rayner spent last year with both the Chiefs and the Chargers and the move by Miami has raised a few eyebrows around the NFL.
The lowly Dolphins were by far the worst team in the league last year after finishing 1-15, but kicker was not thought to be a position they needed to strengthen.
Jay Feely converted 21-of-23 attempts last year, with a career best of 91.3 percent in his first year with Miami.
Rayner could be used as a kick-off specialist since Feely does not have an exceptionally strong leg.
A sixth-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2005, Rayner has converted 41-of-58 lifetime attempts. He was 15-of-22 in 10 games with the Chiefs last year.
Rayner struggled on short kicks, however, and was released by the Chiefs on November 26 after missing a fourth-quarter kick against the Oakland Raiders.
The Chargers signed Rayner on December 28 to handle kick-off duties for the regular-season finale in place of the ailing Nate Kaeding.
