Interim boss given job after impressive finish to 2008 campaign
The Oakland Raiders have confirmed that interim head coach Tom Cable has been given the job on a permanent basis.
The 44-year-old was promoted from offensive line coach on September 30 following the firing of Lane Kiffin by Raiders owner Al Davis.
Cable went 4-8 for the rest of the season though the Raiders did finish with back-to-back victories, including an upset result against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in week 17.
His only previous head coaching experience was at the University of Idaho from 2001-03, where his teams averaged 424 yards of total offence.
However, Davis has been impressed with the stand-in enough to give him the post following a four-month search which included interviewing a handful of other candidates.
Oakland have lost at least 11 games in each of the past six seasons. Their 5-11 record in 2008 was their best in four years.
