Long-serving rusher released by New Orleans after eight years

Team-record running back Deuce McAllister has been released by the New Orleans Saints after eight years. 30-year-old McAllister is the team's all-time leader in rushing yards and touchdowns, but was released by the Saints due to salary cap issues. McAllister was due to receive over $5 million this year as part of the eight-year, $50 million, contract extension he signed in 2005. With his impact limited behind Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush, the decision to release McAllister makes sense for the Saints, despite the team losing a firm fans' favourite. "Decisions like this are always very difficult ones to make," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said.

Hard work

"Deuce has epitomised hard work, leadership and productivity throughout his career and has been a source of great pride for all of us associated with the team. "His records and accomplishments on the field speak for themselves about the type of player he was in a Saints uniform. He truly ranks as one of the greatest players in our club's history, and we are very respectful of everything he has meant to the Saints and our community." Two-time Pro Bowler McAllister had serious knee injuries ruin his 2005 and 2007 seasons, but did mange to run in a team record 54th touchdown in November last year. The 23rd overall pick of the 2001 draft, McAllister finished his eight-year run in New Orleans with 1,429 carries for 6,096 rushing yards and a total of 55 TDs. However, behind the emerging Thomas and superstar Bush, McAllister had just 131 carries and 510 yards over the last two seasons, and his departure seemed inevitable.
Coach praise
"Deuce McAllister epitomises what you look for in a football player," said Saints head coach Sean Payton. "Deuce played a major role with this team in our drive to the NFC championship game. "He has suffered setbacks with his injuries and that has been unfortunate for him and for us as he has played a critical role in our offence. "Today, we start the process of trying to replace him and find that player that embodies what Deuce McAllister has meant to this team." McAllister is the second high-profile rusher to be released in two days, after Fred Taylor was cut by Jacksonville after 11 years with the Jags.
