Running back agrees lucrative long-term extension

Brandon Jacobs has agreed a four-year, $25 million contract to remain with the New York Giants. The Giants had placed the franchise tag on Jacobs, 26, last week to deny him free agency. But the intention was always to come to long-term agreement with the running back - and that has now been achieved. "Both parties are happy to get a long-term deal done," Giants general manager Jerry Reese told the team's official website. "Now Brandon can totally concentrate on the off-season programme and get himself ready to go this fall."

Confident

Jacobs has spent four successful seasons in New York since the Giants' picked him in the fourth round of the 2005 draft. He was part of the Super Bowl-winning team last year and is coming off a season during which he rushed for a career-high 1,089 yards and 15 touchdowns, despite missing three games with a knee injury. "I was confident all along that this was going to get done," he said. "I didn't panic one bit. "I know the reason we did it the way we did; I knew I was going to be here. I was super-confident, and I am here. I'm happy about it." Jacobs' new deal includes $13m in guaranteed money and ties him to Giants Stadium until the end of the 2012 season.
