The New York Giants have signed three free agents, including Chris Canty, while the Washington Redskins have released Jason Taylor.
Linebacker Boley and defensive tackle Bernard move to New York
The New York Giants have further bolstered their defensive options with the signing of three free agents, including lineman Chris Canty.
The 26-year-old, who is reported to have agreed terms on a six-year deal worth $42 million, arrives in the Big Apple after four years with divisional rivals the Dallas Cowboys.
Canty appeared in 16 games last season, managing 37 tackles and three sacks. The Cowboys selected him in the fourth round of the 2005 draft.
The move by the Giants follows on from the double signing of linebacker Michael Boley and defensive tackle Rocky Bernard.
"We had a conviction on who we liked in the free agent market and who could help us get better," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said of the signings.
"We let the three players know that, and the feeling was mutual. They want to win, and they wanted to be here. Fortunately, we were able to get the deals done quickly."
Canty will be part of a defensive line that already includes a pair of Pro Bowl ends in Osi Umenyiora, who missed all of last season through injury, and Justin Tuck.
Taylor cut
Meanwhile, the Giants' NFC East rivals the Washington Redskins have announced the release of defensive end Jason Taylor.
The six-time Pro Bowler spent just one season with the franchise, managing 36 tackles and 3.5 sacks despite missing three games due to a calf injury.
Taylor arrived from the Miami Dolphins via a trade last off-season. He was cut after refusing to add a new off-season workout clause to his contract.
The Redskins had previously been busy bringing in players at the start of free agency, signing much-coveted defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and bringing back guard Derrick Dockery for a second spell with the team.
They also handed a new long-term deal to cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who joined midway through last season after being cut by the Oakland Raiders.
