Niners cornerback could miss entire season with knee injury
The San Francisco 49ers may have lost veteran cornerback Walt Harris for the upcoming season after he tore a ligament in his knee.
34-year-old Harris will need surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament after colliding with wide receiver Dominique Zeigler during practice.
The 13-year NFL veteran was entering his fourth season in San Francisco but could now miss the entire campaign as the injury normally requires a length rehabilitation period.
Harris has 35 career interceptions and four touchdowns and was set to be a leading figure in Mike Singletary's 49ers defence this season.
Alongside Nate Clements, Texas Longhorn product Tarell Brown is now eager to step up and take Harris' place after being drafted two years ago.
"I'm coming into my third year, and I know the scheme like the back of my hand," Brown said.
"I feel like I'm one of the most athletic players on the football field every time I step onto the field. I always see myself as a starter. I'm going to work every day like I'm a starter."
Singletary has problems at the position with Shawntae Spencer, a long-time starter, is still not back in action after missing 14 games last season also because of a knee ligament injury.
Harris had previously never missed more than four games a season during his long career, which included spells with Chicago, Indianapolis and Washington.
