Coach handed contract extension with Minnesota Vikings
Brad Childress has signed a new contract extension with the Minnesota Vikings that reportedly takes him up until 2013.
Childress is in the fourth year of a five-year deal he signed in 2006 and he has since restored the team to the upper echelons of the NFL after joining when they were really struggling.
Childress has improved the Vikings every year, winning six, then eight and ten games last season to win the NFC North and make the play-offs.
A superb collection of talent has been brought into Minnesota and during the off-season Childress ensured that the final piece of the jigsaw was put in place as he brought in Brett Favre.
The determination of the coach and his commitment to bringing in the veteran were two reasons behind Favre deciding to sign for the Vikings, and that decision looks to have paid off so far.
On target
After nine games things have gone largely to plan and the Vikings sit on 8-1 and will be battling it out for the top seeding in the NFC, and all that has led to a new deal for Childress.
"Brad has done a tremendous job leading this football team and we value the positive environment he has created for the Minnesota Vikings on and off the field," owner Zygi Wilf said in a statement.
"He has continued to positively impact this team and create a strong foundation for future success."
Favre has thrown 17 touchdowns and just three interceptions as Childress has him happy to lean on the strong run game supplied by Adrian Peterson while mixing in his own big-play ability.
Childress is delighted to continue his association with the Vikings and hopes to lead them to success in the near future.
"I am grateful for the opportunity I was given," Childress said. "I've got a good group of guys in the locker room, which I've said over and over.
"I've got a great ownership group. Not only am I grateful for them, they've been good owners from a standpoint of empowering us with players. They listen. There's a good dialogue."
