Washington move quickly following firing of Zorn on Monday

Mike Shanahan has been hired by the Washington Redskins to be their new head coach following the recent sacking of Jim Zorn. The former Denver Broncos coach - who won two Super Bowls during his time in charge in Colorado - is believed to have agreed a five-year deal. Shanahan will also hold the role of executive vice-president of football relations, working alongside current executive vice president and general manager Bruce Allen. The Redskins have been in disarray almost all season, falling 4-12 - including losses to then-winless Detroit and Kansas City. Zorn was fired on Monday following the end of the regular season having compiled a 12-20 record during his two seasons in charge. In taking the post, Shanahan becomes the seventh head coach in Washington since owner Dan Snyder purchased the team back in 1999.

Special

"When you take a look at (Redskins) history, the Hall of Fame, the great coaches, the great players, what an honour it is to be the head coach of this franchise," Shanahan said. "It's a very, very special place. Super Bowls, world championships - it's what you call a franchise that has a great history. "I promise you I won't disappoint you. I'm going to give it everything I've got." Allen added: "We were looking for a man who is passionate about football, passionate about the Redskins' history, someone who had a good winning record and someone who could lead our team on and off the field. We got our man."
