Coach fired after dismal 5-11 regular season showing

The Seattle Seahawks have fired head coach Jim Mora after just one season in charge following their failure to qualify for the post-season play-offs. Mora led his hometown side to just five wins from 16 games this term and has now paid the price with his job for that dismal return. "We've made a tough decision today (Friday)," stated Seahawks chief executive Tod Leiweke. "It became apparent after conducting an extensive internal audit, that a new direction was needed to provide an opportunity for the organization to be successful." Leiweke went on to describe Mora as "truly a stand-up man, who gave his full effort to our franchise." Mora replaced Mike Holmgren who was head coach from 1999-2008 and led the Seahawks to Super Bowl XL in Detroit where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mora, who was promoted to the post after two years as assistant, expressed his disappointment at his sacking, insisting he had hoped to be given the opportunity to turn the outfit's fortunes around. "This team, more importantly this community, means so much to me that it hurts not being able to see this through," Mora said in a statement. "I am disappointed I did not get the chance to complete my contract. This is a tough business that sometimes demands immediate gratification."
