Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has become the first player in NFL history to win the MVP award four times.

Quarterback previously won honour in 2003, 2004 and 2008

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has made history by becoming the first player to win the NFL Most Valuable Player award four times. Manning took the 2009 honour after receiving 39.5 of the 50 votes cast by sports writers and broadcasters who cover the NFL. In the end he won by a landslide majority, with New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees a distant second having polled 7.5 votes. The other players to receive votes were also quarterbacks - San Diego's Phillip Rivers getting two while veteran Brett Favre managed one nomination after a stellar first season with the Minnesota Vikings. Manning was already the defending MVP having picked up the award in 2008, adding to his successes in 2003 and 2004. The 33-year-old has started every game in his NFL career since being chosen by the Colts with the first pick of the 1998 draft. This year Manning has thrown for 4,500 yards and 33 touchdowns to steer Indianapolis to a 14-2 record, with seven of those victories coming courtesy of fourth-quarter comebacks.
