Veteran rusher leaves Cleveland, wants to play on elsewhere
Running back Jamal Lewis has been released by the Cleveland Browns, but hopes to continue his career elsewhere in the NFL.
The 30-year-old's season ended early as he continued to suffer with post-concussion symptoms, and he had said during the last campaign that he would retire.
Cleveland have now chosen to release the Former Baltimore Raven a year ahead of the end of his contract, and Lewis now says that he hopes to play on elsewhere.
Although he still has to be passed medically fit enough to resume his ten-year NFL career, Lewis hopes to find another team for next season, according to his agent Mitch Frankel.
"If Jamal wants to play and he's cleared to play, I think he's got a lot of football he can bring to the table to help an organisation," Frankel said.
Experience
"He can be a significant contributor to the right organisation. Jerome Bettis and some other guys at the end of their careers took on a different role, and I think Jamal can do that."
Lewis was a Super Bowl winner with the Ravens in his rookie season in 2000, and went on to become one of now only six men in history to run for over 2,000 yards in a single season - after Chris Johnson joined the club this year.
With 10,067 rushing yards under his belt, Lewis is now undoubtedly slowing down in production, but he feels he can add some vital experience to a team challenging for next year's Super Bowl.
"Jamal went to the Browns with the hope he'd be successful and go to the play-offs and beyond," Frankel added.
"At this stage in his career, I think he would want to play for a team that has a chance to compete and get back to the Super Bowl, like he did in 2000.
"That's not to say Cleveland can't do that, but it would appear there are other teams out there that, as of today, look a lot stronger."
Lewis ran for exactly 500 yards in nine games last season, and his departure from Cleveland now leaves the exciting Jerome Harrison as the feature back for the Browns.
Harrison enjoyed a storming finish to the season with 561 yards and five scores in the final three games - including a blistering 286-yard, three-TD performance against Kansas City.
