Mo Farah survived another scare as he finished third to qualify for the 5,000m final at the Rio Olympics.

Britain's star distance runner has already claimed gold in the 10,000 metres, despite suffering an early fall, and was almost tripped again in the closing 200m in the first heat of the 5,000 metres.

But Farah quickly regained his footing after a tangle of legs and booked his place in Saturday's final, staying on course to complete a long distance double at successive Games.

The Londoner, who became Britain's first track and field athlete to win three Olympic golds, moved towards the front with five laps to go and cruised across the line in a time of 13 minutes 25.25 seconds.

Farah told the BBC: "I got clipped, had to stay on my feet and stay strong. It's hot, hard work. You have to get through, see how it goes.

Asked about his recovery from the 10,000 metres, the 33-year-old said: "Not as well as I wanted, but I have to have more rest now, put my feet up, chill in my room."
