Scott Weltz caused an upset by winning the 200-metre breaststroke at the United States trials, booking him a place at the London Olympics.
The 25-year-old surged through the field having turned at the halfway stage in sixth position, clocking a time of two minutes 9.01 seconds in Nebraska.
Clark Burckle was second, meaning he will also go to London 2012, but favourites Eric Shanteau and Brendan Hansen missed out.
The duo had already confirmed their places in the team for the 100m breaststroke but now neither will get the chance to double up this summer.
Nathan Adrian won the 100m freestyle in 48.10secs - the fourth-fastest time in the world this year - with Cullen Jones second in 48.46.
