Anoushiravani joins team-mate on medal podium

Behdad Salimi claimed the final Olympic weightlifting gold of London 2012, adding the crown to his world title in the +105kg category. The Iranian super-heavyweight went into the event as the hot favourite and didn't disappoint. The 22-year-old managed a total of 455kg to clinch his country's first weightlifting gold since the 2004 Games in Athens. His team-mate Sajjad Anoushiravani (449kg) took silver, much to the delight of the large Iranian contingent in the ExCeL, with Russia's Ruslan Albegov (448kg) going home with bronze. Beijing gold medallist Matthias Steiner failed to defend his title, suffering a worring injury during a lift. Making his second snatch attempt of 196kg, Steiner was unable to raise the weights fully and, falling back, could not help but drop the bar down on to his head and then shoulder. He managed to walk off stage but was later taken to hospital for a routine assessment.
