Lisa Norden: Pipped by Nicola Spring to the gold medal but Sweden have appealed to CAS

Sweden have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport for Lisa Norden to be awarded a gold medal and a share of first place in the women's triathlon race at the Olympics.

Norden crossed the line at the same time as Switzerland's Nicola Spirig in last Saturday's race, but the International Triathlon Union (ITU) said the photo-finish put her in silver position.

The Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) and the Swedish Triathlon Federation (STF) dispute that result, and after failing with an appeal to the ITU have taken their case to the highest court in sport.

A statement from CAS said: "The Swedish NOC (national Olympic committee) and the STF consider that the ITU did not comply with its own rules because it may not have taken into account the position of the athletes' torsos when establishing the medal positions.

Not possible

"They add that it is not possible to distinguish precisely on the photo-finish the position of Spirig's torso, which is slightly back from her belly and which is hidden by the torso of the Swedish athlete.

"For that reason, the Swedish NOC and STF request that both athletes be ranked ex-aequo (equal) in first place and that a second gold medal for this event be awarded to Lisa Norden."

CAS will have a hearing on Friday evening and announce a decision on Saturday.
