London is the first city to host the modern Olympics three times - with the capital also staging the Games back in 1908 and 1948. Around 10,490 athletes from 205 nations will take part in 26 Olympic sports over 19 days. There are more women taking part in the Olympics than ever before. There will be 4,688 women and 5,802 men - with women making up 46% of the Games' competitors - in 1908 male competitors outnumbered females 53 to one. 8.8 million tickets available at 34 venues. 21,000 accredited media and broadcasters. 1 million pieces of sports equipment sourced by LOCOG including: 510 adjustable athletics hurdles, 541 life jackets, 600 basketballs & 2,700 footballs. 10,000 temporary toilets will be used, enough to service the entire population of Malta. 2,500 tented units will be used covering 2.5 million square feet - enough to cover Hong Kong. The Olympic Stadium will seat 80,000 fans. 10,000 tonnes of steel were used to build the stadium, compared to the 42,000 used for the Bird's Nest in Beijing four years ago. 14 million meals are expected to be served at the Games, the Athletes' Village will serve 45,000 a day using 25,000 loaves of bread and 232 tons of potatoes. 4,700 Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be handed out at the London 2012 at 805 victory ceremonies across 30 venues at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Metal for the Olympic medals comes from Rio Tinto's Kennecott Utah Copper mine and from the Oyu Tolgoi project in Mongolia. The London 2012 medals weigh between 375-400g, are 85mm in diameter and 7mm thick and will be engraved on the rim with the sport and discipline of each winner. An Olympic gold medal is valued at around £450. 46,000 people have worked on the Olympic Park - with 4,000 trees have been planted along with 74,000 plants, 60,000 bulbs in the UK's largest planting project. 2,000 newts have also been relocated.
