Rugby League star backs Living for Sport

Australian rugby league star and Bradford Bulls half-back Matt Orford led a Sky Sports Living for Sport rugby masterclass for young people from Dixons Allerton Academy in Bradford. Sky Sports Living for Sport, available free to all secondary schools in the UK, uses sport to motivate and inspire 11 to 16-year-olds. More information about the free initiative, in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust and Sky, can be found at: www.skysports.com/livingforsport. Ten young people from Dixons Allerton Academy in Bradford currently involved in Sky Sports Living for Sport, learned rugby league basics at Grattan Stadium in Bradford. The class was overseen by Orford and Bradford Bulls coach Stuart Barrow. Orford and Barrow then joined forces to share their experiences in a question and answer session with the youngsters, with the aim of teaching new skills and encouraging them to discover the enjoyment that can be gained from sport. 2008 NRL Grand Final winner Orford said: "It's great to be able to give something back so soon after joining Super League. "I'm really looking forward to getting involved and helping some of the young people on the Sky Sports Living for Sport scheme to learn new rugby skills. It's a really positive initiative which motivates and inspires thousands of young people through sport." The initiative, supported by the department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), aims to encourage pupils to take on different activities and learn new sports, from football to fencing and basketball to boccia. Teachers can use these sessions to help pupils work towards measurable self-development goals. As the pupils grow and develop they are encouraged to put their new skills and confidence into practice outside the initiative by developing and managing their own sporting events. Orford is lending his support to the work being done by of a team of Athlete Mentors, who provide support and advice to youngsters involved with Sky Sports Living for Sport through visits to schools across the country. Using their own story of struggle and success through sport, they help teachers to motivate and inspire young people at all levels of sporting ability.
