Quartet axed by Widnes

Widnes have announced that four members of their current squad will not be needed when the Vikings return to Super League.

Thackeray among four players who will depart before next year

Widnes have announced that four members of their current squad will not be needed when the Vikings return to Super League next season. The quartet includes stand-off Anthony Thackeray, who was Widnes' leading try-scorer last year and an integral part of the 2009 Northern Rail Cup triumph which allowed them to apply for a Super League licence. He is joined by forward Chris Gerrard, hooker Kirk Netherton and centre James Ford in being told that their contracts will not be renewed. Widnes director of rugby Paul Cullen thanked the four players for their contributions but feels that the squad needs to be improved ahead of their return to the top-flight. "This is a direct result of the performances so far this season at first-team level and is phase one of the club's 2011 assessment process," he said.

Dignity

"The club would like to sincerely thank the four players for their contribution toward our successful Super League licence application. "All four of them have taken the decision with dignity and maturity and have been model professionals throughout." Prop Ben Kavanagh is currently the only player to be given a Super League contract by Widnes, who were given a three-year licence earlier in April. Meanwhile, the Vikings have acquired Wigan half-back Joe Mellor on a dual registration as they try to kick-start their Championship season after only two wins in their opening five matches. Second-rower Simon Finnigan has replaced Dave Allen as captain for the rest of the season, with Chaz I'Anson installed as vice-captain.
