Ex-St Helens coach Nathan Brown to take Knights job

Former Huddersfield and St Helens boss Nathan Brown has been recommended for the vacant post at Newcastle Knights.
The 42-year-old, who returned to Australia after guiding Saints to their Grand Final success last October, is poised to take over from caretaker coach Danny Buderus, who has been in charge of the Knights since the sacking of Rick Stone in July.
Newcastle chief executive Matt Gidley, a former St Helens player, said: "The football committee has made the recommendation to the board that Nathan was the strongest candidate throughout the process. He was interviewed on two separate occasions and was a real stand-out."
Brown cut his coaching teeth in the NRL with St George Illawarra, where he spent six seasons from 2003-08 before moving to England.
He was Super League's coach of the year in 2009 after taking Huddersfield to the Challenge Cup final and guided Saints to Old Trafford glory in his second season at Langtree Park.
Meanwhile, former St Helens forward Mark Flanagan is unclear where his future lies.
The 27-year-old Oldham-born player, who joined Saints from a successful stint in the NRL with Wests Tigers four years ago, is out of contract at the end of the season and still waiting to discover if he is to be offered a new deal.
"My preference is to stay at Saints but it's looking doubtful at the moment because nothing has been put on the table as yet," Flanagan said.
"We're still in dialogue and I'm taking to a few other clubs but nothing has been sorted."
