Castleford will be without Justin Carney for up to eight weeks.
The Australian winger needs an operation on the elbow he damaged during last weekend's Super League victory over Hull KR.
It was initially feared he had broken a bone, but further examination revealed just a dislocation, and the prognosis is about as good as the Tigers could have anticipated.
"Justin needs an operation and will be out for six to eight weeks," said Castleford coach Daryl Powell.
"It's tough to take but is probably the best-case scenario we could have expected. We hope to get a key strike weapon back ASAP."
James Clare has recovered from a knee injury and could replace Carney against Widnes this weekend.
