Warrington, defence, looking after our players and playing for just one country makes Brian Carney's Set of Six.
The big talking points in the world of rugby league
Each week Brian Carney takes a look at six moments in Super League that have made the headlines - and not always for the right reasons! Players, coaches and decisions all come under Brian's scrutiny as he picks his 'Set of Six'. Find out who and what caught Brian's eye this week - and then use the feedback form below to have your say. WARRINGTON
The Wolves went to Leeds on Friday and were outstanding. They were brutal in defence and looked like they wanted the game to continue so they could keep on scoring tries. They are one of the most entertaining teams to watch and the fans are flocking to see them with a lot of players in good form. The reward for that is they have six players called up for the England v Exiles game. It has been a long time since that has happened for Warrington. Their points for-and-against statistics are ridiculously good and long may that continue. They play exciting rugby and are causing a lot of problems for everyone they play against.
DEFENCE
We talk about the excitement of watching Warrington throw the ball around and how they also keep teams scoreless, but it is worth reminding ourselves that defence plays almost 50 percent of a game as well. We saw the in the Hull v Huddersfield game with some punishing defence, Hull in particular really stood up against a Huddersfiled side who are also a very good defensive side. Kirk Yeaman had two huge tackles - one on Leroy Cudjoe and the other on Scott Grix. When you are hitting them under the ribs and dumping them on their backsides there is a fine line between a great tackle and a dangerous tackle, but I find it very exciting. Hull did not get the result but they showed they were right up for it with a very impressive defensive display. I think that Yeaman was unlucky to get penalised - his arms did go up around Grix's neck but I think that was because Grix collapsed so quickly. I think because he was badly injured he was penalised but I would not have had a problem if he was not penalised.
CONCUSSION
Scott Grix was knocked out before he got anywhere near the ground. Seeing him on the side-line with Dale Ferguson explaining to him exactly what had happened shows how tough these players are but as much as we pride ourselves on their toughness, we also need to be very cautious with concussion injuries. Studies in America in the NFL are deeply concerning regarding players suffering multiple concussions in their careers. While we do applaud our players toughness, I do hope that the RFL are leading the way in protecting players from concussions. The long term affects can be devastating so I really hope the medical department of the RFL are on top of it. They are linking multiple concussions with permanent damage to the brain and there is evidence that this could lead to suicides, this research is in its early stages but we need to keep an eye on it.
STATE OF ORIGIN
We got a master class last Wednesday in tight rugby; it was a real arm wrestle. New South Wales were under so much pressure going into that game and I think everyone was waiting for this Queensland juggernaut to roll on. NSW went behind early but dragged themselves back into the game and got into a fantastic position to win the game. Queensland came up with the killer blow right at the end but it was a fantastic game. I saw enough in that game to make me believe that NSW have a chance in game two and possibly a chance of taking the series if they square it all up heading into game three.
EXILES
We are trying to replicate the State of Origin intensity in out mid-season games over here and hopefully this will become an annual event to rival the Origin. If the Exiles manage to stay injury free well it is one heck of a team that should really put on a show. Hopefully it is an exciting game - if it is then the concept will work. I can understand why this game is a bit vulnerable because if one team lies down and it's a one sided result then it will be hard to build excitement for next year. I know the Exiles are right up for this and England surely have to be up for it too. They have got everything lose; I don't care what anyone says. The pressure is on them to win this game. If they lose then the next question will be what chance will they have at the end of the year. England has got some form players which is what international rugby should be about - never mind your elite squads, that is waste of time in my opinion, you really need to pick on form
INTERNATIONAL TEAMS
Would someone please just come out and tell us why players can play for various countries? Danny Brough has played for Scotland and on Friday week he will play for England. Gareth Carvel has played for Wales and he will play for England - the list goes on! I don't believe this helps develop the likes of Ireland, Scotland and Wales - we cannot have players changing their countries like this. Let's get back to Great Britain - that brand really took off, but this chopping and changing makes it all a complete mockery. I am a proud Irishman and people who represent Ireland and then turn around and represent England two years later are just disgraceful. It really disappoints me, let's end this charade.
