Warrington Wolves have announced that they have parted company with head coach Paul Cullen by mutual consent.

Super League's longest serving coach sees his reign come to an end

Warrington Wolves have announced that they have parted company with head coach Paul Cullen by mutual consent. The news comes as no surprise after the Wolves threw away a 28-14 lead to lose 36-28 to bottom club Castleford on Monday night. The shock defeat at the Halliwell-Jones Stadium left the club sitting in seventh place in the table and angry supporters staged a sit-in protest after the game to show their disappointment. On Tuesday morning Warrington released a statement that confirmed the end of Cullen's reign. He had been the longest-serving coach in Super League having taken charge in 2002.

Service

"On behalf of Warrington Wolves I wish to thank Paul for all of his services to the club," Wolves Chairman Lord Hoyle said. "Paul is Warringtonian through and through and no one could have been more proud wearing the 'primrose and blue' than Paul. "He served the club with distinction for twenty five years as a player, assistant coach and finally as head coach from August 2002. We wish Paul well for the future." Assistant coach James Lowes has been placed in charge on a temporary basis until a permanent successor is found.
Hometown club
Cullen represented his hometown club 348 times as a player and also enjoyed a spell as an assistant before taking the top job six years ago after a spell in charge of Whitehaven. During recent years Warrington have been heavy spenders in a bid for success, recruiting Australian trio Matt King, Chris Hicks and Michael Monaghan during the last off-season. With six Super League wins in their first eight matches the signs looked good, but their form, not helped by several key injuries, has slumped since and Cullen has paid the price. His departure makes him the second coaching casualty of the current season after Peter Sharp left Hull FC last week.
