Thorman scores 54 points in Challenge Cup rout of students

York City Knights re-wrote the Carnegie Challenge Cup record books with a 132-0 victory over Northumbria University at the Huntington Stadium. Former Huddersfield and Hull stand-off Chris Thorman led the spree with a record 54 points from four tries and 19 goals, while former Keighley half-back Jonny Presley scored six of his side's 23 tries. Thorman's personal tally topped the previous individual best by Hull KR's George West, who scored 53 points against Brookland Rovers in 1905, while York's score beat the previous record of 119 set by Huddersfield against Swinton Park in 1914. Huddersfield still hold the record for the biggest win in any game thanks to their 142-4 victory over Blackpool Gladiators in a Regal Trophy tie in 1994 while Barrow beat Nottingham City 138-0 in the same competition in 1994.

Comfortable

On a day of high-scoring matches, Widnes centre Steve Tyrer and Batley scrum half Gareth Moore both scored 26 points to help their clubs to comfortable third-round victories. Former St Helens player Tyrer scored a hat-trick of tries and kicked seven goals as Widnes demolished last year's giant-killers Siddal 54-6 at the Shay, while Moore repeated the effort in Batley's 64-10 romp against Fryston at Mount Pleasant. Sheffield Eagles, 1998 winners, ran in 12 tries in an 82-0 hammering of Leeds Met University at the Don Valley Stadium where they ran in 15 tries. South Wales made an unhappy Challenge Cup debut, losing 62-6 at home to Dewsbury, for whom Dominic Brambani scored two tries and kicked nine goals, while Rochdale got the better of Workington in the other all-Championship tie. Workington led 20-4 at half-time but Hornets produced a stirring second-half fightback to sneak it 22-20 with Liam McGovern scoring the all-important try after 64 minutes.
Jones haul
Oldham booked their place in the fourth round with a 28-16 victory over Hunslet Warriors, while Danny Jones contributed 24 points in Halifax's 76-6 win over Castleford Lock Lane with 10 goals and one of his side's 14 tries. Former St Helens scrum-half Jamie Ellis scored four tries and kicked seven goals in Leigh's 68-24 win over Hull Dockers, while Matthew Harding touched down twice in Hunslet's 48-10 success against Warrington Wizards. The fourth-round draw, which will feature the 14 engage Super League clubs, will be made on March 20.
