Fly-half Dave Walder shone for the Wasps as they claimed an 18-13 success over Racing-Metro 92 to profitably kick-off their Amlin Challenge Cup campaign at Adams Park.
It was a challenging match for the dual Heineken Cup winners, with Walder kicking all his team's points to edge the nervy Pool Four encounter against the Parisian club.
Walder, who is likely to be a regular in the number 10 shirt with Danny Cipriani facing six weeks out due to injury, secured three penalties in each half to cement the verdict.
At half-time Wasps were lagging 10-9 after conceding the game's only try to Racing-Metro flanker Ashley Clarke, but were able to fight back in the second half with Walder keeping his composure.
The French club's fly-half Jonathan Wisniewski converted Clarke's touchdown, with star signing South African World Cup winner Francois Steyn slotting a penalty along with substitute Julien Saubade.
A losing bonus point could be crucial in the final shake-up for Racing-Metro though, particularly as quarter-final places are only guaranteed for pool winners.
