Roger Federer will play in the Miami Open next week, after a torn knee cartilage kept him from playing tournaments in Rotterdam, Dubai and Indian Wells.

The announcement was made by Tony Godsick, Federer's agent, while the 17-time Grand Slam winner confirmed his return to competitive tennis on Twitter with a series of emojis.

Federer had surgery last month after sustaining a knee injury the day after his semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open.

The announcement comes as a surprise as the Swiss champion was expected to repeat his 2015 schedule and skip Miami.

Federer is a two-time champion at Crandon Park, but his last win was over a decade ago.
