Garbine Muguruza came from behind to defeat Flavia Pennetta and keep up her unbeaten record in the season-ending WTA Tournament of Champions.

The seventh-seeded Spaniard defeated the Italian 0-6 6-1 6-1 to become the only undefeated player in the Serdika Group.

She broke serve five times on her way to victory and will finish her round robin games on Friday with a clash against Alize Cornet.

The French player’s own hopes of a semi-final spot were kept alive with a 6-1 6-4 victory over top-seed Ekaterina Makarova.

Afterwards the Russian announced she was withdrawing from the rest of tournament because of a back injury sustained in Singapore. She will now be replaced by Czech player Karolina Pliskova, who will take on Pennetta on Friday.

"I tried my best tennis, but it is not possible for me to play at my highest level right now,” said Makarova, who lost her opening game to Muguruza in straight sets on Wednesday.
