Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer renew US Open rivalry
Sunday 13 September 2015 22:42, UK
The latest instalment in the great rivalry between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer has all the makings of another classic encounter, with the US Open title at stake.
Sunday night's meeting, live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 8.30pm, will be the 42nd time the pair have met in their decade-long rivalry, and a record-breaking 14th Grand Slam encounter, with Federer leading the head-to-head 21-20.
It is Djokovic, though, who holds the advantage in Grand Slams, with seven wins to Federer's six.
When it comes to Flushing Meadows, it is the Swiss who has the happier memories. Federer is a five-time winner of the tournament, with one of those titles coming at the expense of the Serb in 2007. And it is Federer who leads the overall head-to-head in New York, with three wins from their five encounters.
But the two have not met at Flushing Meadows since 2011, and since then it has been Djokovic who has dominated the men's game. Since beating Federer in the 2011 US Open final, the Serb has won eight Grand Slam titles and cemented his status as the world No 1. Federer, by contrast, has just one major to his name in the last three years - the 2012 Wimbledon title.
Djokovic also holds the recent advantage over Federer, beating him in this year's Wimbledon final. The world No 1 has dominated the majors in 2015, reaching all four Grand Slam finals - only the third man to do so. Victory would secure his third major title of the year and his tenth overall.
But Federer is in imperious form heading into this final. The world No 2 has not dropped a set at Flushing Meadows this year, and has been broken just twice in 81 service games. He also conquered Djokovic in their most recent meeting to win the Cincinnati Masters last month. Victory on Sunday night would make him the first player in the Open era to win six US Open titles.
