Yannick Noah, the last Frenchman to win a Grand Slam title, has been named as his country's new Davis Cup captain.

Noah, who won the French Open in 1983, is taking over from Arnaud Clement, who was sacked last week following a disappointing 2015.

"I think some (players) asked for a change," Clement said last week. "But a vast majority of players supported me and I believe they would have been happy to continue with me next year."

France, champions nine times, were beaten by Great Britain in the World Group quarter-finals.

Noah, who has reinvented himself into a successful singer, captained France to the 1991 and 1996 Davis Cup titles.

The French tennis federation says he will be in charge of the Davis Cup "for the 2016 campaign."
